Attended by Stephen Timms MP, Jonathan Reynolds MP, Rosie Duffield, Alex Cunningham, Marsha De Cordova MP, Eleanor Smith MP and many more who are supporting including last year’s intake. Eleanor Patricia Smith MP Member of Parliament (MP) for Wolverhampton South West since the 2017 general election. The first MP from an African Caribbean background to represent a constituency in the West Midlands. Prior to being an MP, Eleanor was a theatre nurse and President of the trade union Unison in 2011. Eleanor has also served as Chair of the Midlands Regional Trades Union Congress. From nursing to politics!!! Encouraged by the union to train to become and MP. Elected in 2017 and now doing a great job for all of her constituents.

A former theatre nurse, who historically took over Enoch Powell’s old seat!!! Eleanor says ” I am the first but I hope I will not be the last!” ” I am MP for everyone.” Admirable words from a woman who now stands in the same seat where Enoch Powell gave his now famous Rivers of blood speech 50 years ago… RT Hon Eleanor Smith MP well done and thank you. I too hope that you will not be the last of your calibre or background.

Unison union elected First Black Woman President (2011). Eleanor Smith worked at Birmingham Women’s Hospital as a theatre nurse A theatre nurse from Birmingham when she was elected as the new president of the public sector trade union Unison. Eleanor Smith was the first black woman to hold the position – the highest a member of the union can hold. Mrs Smith, who was born and raised in Birmingham, trained at Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital and now works at Birmingham Women’s Hospital. I AM Woman – I AM Mother/ing

This week has been characterized by loss bereavement due to an unfortunate and fatal knife crime and a community response of love … I observed a family struggle with the untimely loss of a young father brother son cousin and friend and a community respond with love concern and genuine heartfelt care. I saw men stand up and be counted in the deep acknowledgement of their strength of feeling and compassion. It hurts….
